Alan Cooke, Chief Executive of the IAVI has announced his intention to retire

After forty years in the property profession, Alan Cooke, Chief Executive at Irish Auctioneers and Valuers Institute has announced his intention to retire at the end of December 2010. We would like to express our gratitude for Alan’s strong and lasting commitment to the European idea, and we wish him and his family the very best for a happy retirement.

His decision follows the merger of the IAVI and the Society of Chartered Surveyors (SCS), forming the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI), to be launched in January 2011. He has made himself available as a consultant to SCSI for some time.

Before commencing the running of IAVI at the beginning of 1994, Alan spent 23 years in practice. This experience proved most important to strengthen the association’s position as the country’s leading property body, representing auctioneers, estate agents, valuers and property professionals.

During his tenure, IAVI membership doubled and there were great developments in the Institute’s activities and services, including education, the compensation fund, the benevolent fund and the international network. He was centrally involved in the negotiations leading up to the merger between the IAVI and the SCS, announced last June.

Alan has been Chief Executive of the IAVI since 1994 and played a key role in the development of higher standards of education and professionalism in the property sector. He introduced an honours degree in Property Studies entry requirement for membership of the IAVI, and completed a 100% audit of IAVI members complying with Continual Professional Development (CPD) requirements. This resulted in the IAVI being in a position to merge with the Society of Chartered Surveyors (SCS).

He also served on several government task forces, including the Auctioneering & Estate Agency Review group, which played a central role in the development of the Property Services (Regulation) Bill to regulate the property sector, which will hopefully be enacted shortly.

Alan studied at the Dublin Institute of Technology leading to IAVI membership. He is a fellow of the IAVI, the Royal institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Society of Chartered Surveyors (SCS).

Alan Cooke represented the IAVI in a number of international bodies, including the International Consortium of Real Estate Associations (ICREA) and the European Property Agents Group (EPAG) within CEPI. He was serving as a member of the Strategic Planning Committee in EPAG and CEPI, and his advice was greatly appreciated. He always expressed outspoken support to initiatives that contribute to facilitate cross border business for real estate professionals.

“An email got an answer within a few minutes. I appreciated his concise, concrete and straightforward way to answer questions and help in solving problems”, says Xavier Ortegat. “IAVI has also been very active in developing European life long learning modules”, added Mark van De Woestijne, CEPI Administrator, in charge of education projects.“This qualitative work will prove most efficient and is extremely well received.”

We are confident that SCSI will build on these attainments...
