At an event on 19 June at which the CEPI Secretariat was represented European Commissioners Miguel Arias Cañete and Günther Oettinger discussed with stakeholders the energy efficiency of buildings and current developments at EU level. The event was co-chaired by DG Energy and ZIA (Zentraler Immobilien Ausschuss) as part of EU Sustainable Energy Week 2019.
Mr Miguel Arias Cañete, EU Commissioner for Climate Action & Energy, gave a keynote speech on EU building energy efficiency policies and the way ahead, whilst Mr Günther Oettinger, EU Commissioner for Budget & Human Resources, spoke about what the EU budget can do concerning investments in energy efficiency.
Stakeholders from the building sector including representatives of the heating and construction industries as well as tenants and social housing shared their perspectives on how to achieve the cost-effective decarbonisation of buildings. The importance and value of the building sector to the EU economy was emphasised, but it also cuts across a number of policy issues and is fragmented with a wide range of different stakeholders. The EU now has in place an ambitious framework of measures aimed at tackling issues related to climate change. The correct implementation of these measures over the next few years will be crucial to the success of efforts to realise energy savings in the building sector.
