Portugal’s priorities for the Presidency of the Council of the European Union - online briefing

On December 3rd, CEPI attended the online event “Portugal’s priorities for the Presidency of the Council of the European Union”, organised by the European Policy Centre.

Special guest of the online briefing was His Excellency Mr. Nuno Brito, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Representative of Portugal to the European Union.

On 1 January 2021, Portugal will assume the six-months rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union. Priorities of the Portuguese Presidency will include:
  • the creation of a greener, more digitalised and sustainable Europe, whereby no one is left behind and Europe should become a leader in terms of climate action;
  • the definition and implementation of the future relationship with the United Kingdom. As of the 1st of January 2021, the Brexit transition period will be over. The British and Europeans share numerous interests and values and, hence, cultivating positive relations with the former member will be a priority;
  • the enhancement of the relationship between the Europe and the new US administration;
  • the strengthening of European global ambitions, through trade agreements and strategic partnerships with fundamental political actors, such as India and the African countries of the Cotonou Agreement.
