European Council, 21-22 October 2021

On 21st and 22nd October, EU leaders will meet in Brussels during the European Council meeting to discuss major topics such as COVID-19, the digital transformation, energy prices, migration, and external relations.

Among the themes mentioned above, the agenda will explore EU’s progresses to enhance a fair and strong digital future for Europe by safeguarding EU values and citizens’ fundamental rights and security as key elements of the digital transition. The discussion will put a focus on digital connectivity as a goal to give all Europeans access to technology complying with the issue of 5G networks deployment.
Furthermore, the leaders will touch upon the topic of energy supply for consumers and businesses to emphasize the importance of green energy transition. Energy prices in Europe have soared in recent months, underlining the need of a necessary large-scale investment to making the clean and renewable energy transition effective. As such, short-term measures through state aid in addition to EU’s recovery programme NextGenerationEU should be considered during the meeting as to address the impacts of the recent rise in prices in the sector.
