Efficient district heating systems: How to achieve cost-effective decarbonisation?- Virtual conference

On March 16, the Secretariat of CEPI attended a virtual conference "Efficient district heating systems: How to achieve cost-effective decarbonisation?", organized by EURACTIV.

In its last year's proposal for recasting the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (EED), the European Commission particularly focused on district heating and cooling. With the goal of moving away from fossil fuel-based systems, the definition of efficient systems will gradually be tightened, whereas additional criteria will be introduced for specific emissions in high-efficiency cogeneration. The virtual conference focused on the new definition of efficient district heating systems in the EED proposal, and how stakeholders can cooperate to achieve cost-effective decarbonisation.

During the event, we had a chance to hear from the following panellists: Claudia Canevari, Head of Unit for Energy Efficiency at the Directorate General for Energy of the European Commission (DG ENERGY); MEP Tsvetelina Penkova, shadow Rapporteur for the recast of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) and member of the European Parliament's Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE); MEP Eleonora Evi, Rapporteur for the recast of the Energy efficiency Directive (EED) and member of the European Parliament's Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI); Hans Korteweg, Managing Director at the European Association for the Promotion of Cogeneration (COGEN); Dr. Andrej Jentsch, Programme Manager at the International Energy Agency Technology Collaboration Programme on District heating and cooling; Wanda Buk, Vice-President for Regulatory Affairs at Pacific Gas and Electric Company.
