Money Laundering through the Real Estate sector – FATF webinar


On December 14, the CEPI Secretariat attended the FATF/GAFI (Financial Action Task Force / Groupe d’action financière) webinar on money laundering in the real estate sector.
Speakers of the event, moderated by Mr Peter German KC, President of the International Centre for Criminal Law Reform and Chair of the Advisory Committee of the Vancouver Anti-Corruption Institute (VACI), included: Mr Tommas Kaplan (von Poll), Ms Christine Lustig (Finance Intelligence Unit FIU, Germany), Ms Nicola Thivessen (Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward), Mr Andrew Sander (US Treasury), and Ms Susan J. Schneider (US Department of Justice).

Panelists exchanged their views and experiences in tackling money laundering through the real estate sector, in particular the workshop focused on how to disrupt the process of laundering proceeds from illicit activities from risk identification mitigation to reporting and cooperation between practitioners and law enforcement; public-private partnerships;supervisory framework and challenges, and the impact on the real estate sector and market.

The importance of the updated FATF Guidance for a Risk-Based Approach (RBA) for the Real Estate Sector, a project co-led by CEPI, was also underlined. The RBA Guidance is available here.
