Members of the European Parliament adopt draft rules for a climate-neutral building sector by 2050 (EPBD recast)

On March 14, during the vote held in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, MEPs adopted draft measures to increase the renovation rate in the Union and reduce energy consumption as outlined in the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive.
The Parliament adopted its position on the file by 343 votes to 216, and 78 abstentions. Members of the European Parliament will now enter into negotiations with the Council to agree on the final text of the EU law.

Rapporteur, Mr Ciarán Cuffe (Greens/EFA) stated: “Soaring energy prices have put the focus on energy efficiency and energy saving measures. Improving the performance of Europe’s buildings will reduce bills and our dependence on energy imports. We want the directive to reduce energy poverty and bring down emissions, and provide better indoor environments for people’s health. This is a growth strategy for Europe that will deliver hundreds of thousands of good quality, local jobs in the construction, renovation, and renewable industries, while improving the well-being of millions of people living in Europe.”
