Access to Decent and Affordable Housing - online event

On March 11, the Secretariat attended the online event “Access to Decent and Affordable Housing”, organised by the Portuguese association “Associaçao dos Inquilinos Lisbonenses” (AIL).

Last January, the European Parliament approved by majority the Initiative Report on Access to Decent and Affordable Housing for All (2019/2187-INI), by Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Ms Kim Van Sparrentak. The panellists discussed the great challenges and opportunities that this report represents for the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the future of the right to housing in the various Member States of the European Union, especially in light of the COVID-19 crisis.

Speakers of the event included: MEP Ms Kim Van Sparrentak (The Greens/European Free Alliance); Ms Barbara Steenbergen and Ms Marie Linder of the International Union of Tenants; Ms Leilani Farha, Former United Nations Rapporteur on the Right to Housing; Ms Saskia Sassen, Professor of sociology at Columbia University; Mr Romão Lavandinho of the Lisbon Tenants Association; Ms Marina Gonçalves, Portugal’s Secretary of State for Housing; and Ms Paula Marques, Councillor for Housing at the Lisbon City Council.
